IDEOLOGI MEDIA DI BALIK WACANA TENTANG PERUBAHAN PERAN TNI
( Analisis Wacana Kritis Terhadap Tajuk Rencana / Editorial tentang Perubahan Peran TNI pada Era Reformasi di Harian Kompas dan Media Indonesia)

Program Pascasarjana Universitas Prof. Dr.Moestopo (Beragama), JakartaAbstract
This research uses Norman Fairclough‘s critical discourse analysis with the critical paradigm to see how the reality of the changes was constructed by Kompas and Media Indonesia, thus what power lies behind the idea. From the text analyzing of Kompas and Media Indonesia editorials point out that the two media have similar perspective on the distinguishing roles of the Indonesian National Military in the early of the reform era. Their perspective are that Indonesian National Military must be reformed especially by eliminating of the “Dual Functions”, because the roles would be the barriers of democracy process. Kompas tends to see that the shift of TNI’s roles should be conducted gradually. On the other hand, according to Media Indonesia that the shift of TNI’s roles tend to be conducted totally in a short period of time, in order to promote TNI’s professionalism, so that TNI will regain trust from people. While criticizing the shift of TNI’s roles, Kompas uses euphemism language and always quotes the statements from some of the Indonesian Military leaders. On the other side, Media Indonesia tends to use diphemism language and for publishing the messages seems to be underestimate on the roles of Indonesian Military.
According to Robert N. Etman’s framing model of analysis, that Kompas seems to legitimate the roles of TNI by giving a positive discourse in constructing the reality of the distinguishing roles of the Indonesian Military thereby it could create a positive image of the Indonesian National Military. On the other hand, Media Indonesia tends to delegitimate TNI’s role by giving a negative discourse in constructing the reality of the distinguishing roles of the Indonesian military. As a result, this kind of actions could create negative perspective toward TNI.
In this case, Kompas and Media Indonesia seem to be affected by Jacob Utama and Surya Paloh, who play important role in producing “Tajuk Rencana” and “Editorial”. It means that Kompas and Media Indonesia’s appearances in portraying their editorials could not be separated from their ideology as a background in producing the contents of those medias. As mentioned by Mathew Kieran, this situation could happen because news is not created in an empty room. News is produced by dominant ideology in a competent field of a certain circumstances.
From their constructed point of views, Kompas ideology seems to be more economic oriented. In this case, Kompas tend to protect its market and pertaining as one of mass media in the pluralistic Indonesian market. However, as a professional mass media, Kompas is still idealistic and realistic in seeing the shift of TNI’s role in society. On the other hand, Media Indonesia seems to be very colored by nationalistic ideology in constructing the reality of the shifting role of TNI. In this case, Media Indonesia tends to be idealistic and normative in observing the roles of TNI.

This research attempts to reveals the construction of political discourse developed by two candidates of Indonesia president in the 2004 election Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Megawati Soekarnoputri. Using Fairclough’s method of critical discourse analysis, it observes political news items in Kompas and Media Indonesia daily newspapers. It finds that the two newspapers contract the candidate’s vision of political changes differently. In Kompas Yudhoyono’s vision of political changes is constructed as people needs, whereas Soekarnoputri’s is constructed as people’s expectation of changes. In Media Indonesia vision of the first candidate is constructed as spirit of national unity, whereas that of the second candidate is constructed as her willingness to maintain status quo of her government administration. The differences of the media construction are mostly influenced by economic orientation of media practitioners and business orientation of the media institutions in addition to power, culture, and economy politic orientations of the media system in the country.

This research analyzes political advertisements shown on television during the 2004 General Election for Legislative Candidates. The analysis is conducted based on the leadership aspects of women legislative candidates, by utilizing the paradigm of critical discourse analysis developed by Norman Fairclough, as well as that of the semiotic – triangle of meaning developed by Charles Sanders Peirce. A feminism perspective within the study framework of the patriarchal universe of discourse by Julia Penelope was also utilized to interpret the texts. The research identifies that the leadership representation of women legislative candidates shown on the political advertisements in the 2004 General Election is strongly influenced by patriarchal culture, which has formed the mindset of communicator who produced the texts. The result of the research confirms the discourse theory assumptions that the texts shown on the political advertisements cannot be interpreted alone by seeing the texts from the surface. -
